The New Zealand green-lipped mussel (widely known as Greenshell™) is a native marine bivalve and New Zealand's most valuable farmed aquaculture export. Prized globally for its sweet flavor and anti-inflammatory properties, the species forms the cornerstone of a major sustainable seafood industry.
Farms primarily operate in pristine, nutrient-rich waters located in the Marlborough Sounds (e.g., Kenepuru Sound), Tasman Bay, and the Coromandel. The farming process relies on capturing naturally occurring wild spat (baby mussels) on ropes. Because the mussels feed entirely on naturally filtered phytoplankton, the farms require zero artificial feed and actually enhance marine biodiversity by creating artificial reefs
